A good portion of the bands material hints at the more aggressive, groove-oriented side of melodic rock. Funky rhythms snap and crackle underneath pop song structuring, giving each embedded verse and chorus an added punch. Backing vocals chime in at precisly the right time, never sounding like cheap shots at rock radio. Singer-songwriter Kurzban orchestrates a brilliant convergence of soul-driven pop and power-rock with the standard instrumental palette using various shades of drums, bass, guitar and keyboard. But from this generic band setup comes anything but generic sounds. Arresting on CD and striking on stage, DAMN GLAD is fueled by something much deeper than industry dollars and celebrity cents. Kurzban has a great voice, supplemented by quality lyrics. He emotes with equal parts tonal accuracy and soulful passion, giving each song a strong presence and unique feel. The supporting rhythm is complimentary to Kurzban's personal style, but not to be undermined by his heightened status as the band's musical director. The percussive prowess of Jeff Baker is ever-present as he keeps his beats straightforward and graceful. Robert Cuevas brings up the low end with a strong sense of melody and a solid bond to the other instrumentation.
